COUNTIES CALL FOR TIMBER HARVEST OVER ALL OTHER VALUES ON STATE FORESTS
Leaders from Tillamook and Clatsop counties have called for timber production to be legally enshrined as the dominant purpose of the state forests.

BOARD OF FORESTRY REDUCES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS ON STATE FORESTS on EARTH DAY 2010
On April 22, the Board of Forestry moved forward on the State Forester's recommendation to weaken environmental protections on the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests. Public comments taken before the meeting were overwhelmingly against the increased emphasis on timber. The vote was 5-2, with board members Hayes and Hutchison opposed. Blackwell, Mukumoto, Giustina, Phillippi, and Wilson all supported the timber harvest increase.

RECENT HARVEST LEVELS UNSUSTAINABLE
In November of 2008, the Department of Forestry completed a new analysis that showed recent harvest levels have been significantly above the level sustainable under the current plans. New models of tree growth showed many stands growing much more slowly than had been previously thought -- and no one knows why. In addition, better data showed far more areas were too steep to harvest.

The Wilson will see intensive clearcutting over the next 40 years if this recommendation goes forward. It is too extreme. We need balance on our state forests.
